We at Clean North congratulate the three winners in the City Beautification Green Glove Award category: The Linklaters at 56 Campbell Ave., the Vanderheydons at 104 Broadview Dr., and the Panas residence at 97 Spadina Ave. These winners will receive their award plaques at a reception on Wednesday, September 14 at the Bushplane Museum.
The Green Glove Award is sponsored by Clean North and recognizes those who use sustainable practices in their yards and gardens.
So what are some of the practices that Green Glove Award judges look for?
- A balance of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials to promote diversity, with an emphasis on native plants
- Few or no invasive species
- Plants that appeal to birds, insects and butterflies
- Wildlife shelters such as bird, toad, butterfly, bee, and/or bat houses
- Composting
- Use of organic fertilizers such as manure, leaves, etc.
- Water conservation measures such as choosing drought-tolerant plants, matching plants to site to reduce watering, having rain barrels, using soaker hoses or drip irrigation, and applying mulch
- Natural pest/disease controls such as trap crops, companion planting, natural pest barriers, good garden hygiene, other organic techniques
- Creative/innovative recycling or re-use of items/materials in the garden and as decor
- Food production (vegetable garden, fruit trees/shrubs)
