Each year, more than a BILLION pumpkins are grown in North America, and over half are not used for food. What a waste! Let’s make sure every pumpkin in the Sault and Algoma District does not end up in a landfill. So what are your options?
Whole, intact pumpkins (unpainted; paint can contain toxic substances such as lead):
- Drop off at Harvest Algoma, 446 Second Line East until 4:30 pm on November 6 (will be used to help feed those in need)
- Keep! Cut open, remove seeds, roast flesh/seeds, remove skin from flesh, freeze for pies, muffins, soup, etc.
Carved pumpkins:
- Cut up and drop in your composter (remove candle/wax)
- Give to a friend who has a composter
- Drop off at Lemieux Composting on Black Road
- Drop off at the marked GFL bin at Cambrian Mall until November 6 at 4:30 pm
Thank you for helping to feed the hungry and extend landfill life.
BONUS: Keeping pumpkins out of the landfill helps fight climate change: In the anaerobic conditions of landfills, organic matter such as pumpkins emits methane, a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
