Did you know…? Some packing peanuts are made out of corn or wheat starch rather than styrofoam, so they can be composted! The test for whether your peanuts are biodegradable is to run one under the faucet. If it melts…it’s biodegradable. You can throw the peanuts in your composter. Or can dampen your finger tips and have fun building cool stuff with them!
If a manufacturer sends you a product packed in biodegradable peanuts, be sure to message them and let them know how much you appreciate their not using styrofoam.
We are sad to report that in Sault Ste. Marie, you can no longer recycle styrofoam. It’s not good that it is ending up in the landfill. Styrene, the key chemical in styrofoam, is a probable carcinogen, not to mention styrofoam is bulky and takes hundreds of years to break down. Why fill up our landfills with this nasty and unnecessary product? Let your voice be heard: Tell manufacturers to stop using styrofoam to ship their products, and let restaurants know you don’t appreciate styrofoam leftover containers (by the way, styrofoam exposed to hot food and beverages can leach chemicals).
