Earth Day is coming up on April 17! Here are 5 ways you can mark the occasion to help green our world:
- Sit your family down and sign a pledge to reduce use of single use plastics such as plastic flossers, straws, and plastic grocery bags. Did you know…? You can now buy real silk dental floss that comes in glass containers!
- Develop a plan to remove invasive plants from your flower beds. Some great candidates to give the boot: periwinkle, Himalayan balsam, yellow iris, goutweed, tatarian honeysuckle, and norway maple. Want to know more? Check out this Grow Me Instead guide for northern Ontario.
- Turn your thermostat down just 1 degree. Doing just that can help make a difference in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Try it…and see if you notice the difference. And if you don’t yet have a programmable thermostat, get one so you can program it to reduce energy use when you are not at home.
- Consider composting your fruit and veggie scraps! It’s not hard to do, and it will help keep unnecessary waste out of the landfill. It is possible to compost year round, even in Sault Ste. Marie. Lots of families do it!
- Mark your calendar for the Earth Day presentation at the library downtown! Local adventurer Conor Mihell will be speaking about Ontario’s parks and protected areas. This event starts at 6:30 pm. To register, call the library at (705)759-5236.
However, you celebrate Earth Day, even if you just turn off your lights for an hour that evening, thank you for doing your part to help green the planet.
