Subject: Looking for youth 15-18 years to participate in a youth exchange

ROTARYFEST EXCHANGE

ROTARYFEST is participating in a pilot project this summer that, if
successful, could expand nation-wide.

Under the organization of The Society of Educational Visits and Exchanges
Canada (SEVEC) and with financial support from the Department of Canadian
Heritage, an exchange is being developed that will enable Canadian youth to
become more aware and involved in communities across Canada through
volunteerism.

We need your help in finding candidates! Please spread the word to your
sons/daughters and their friends, grandchildren, neighbors, co-workers, etc.
Cathleen Cogan Bird, Special Projects Manager for SEVEC, will be in the
Sault on Thursday, May 5 for a public information session. Interested youth
and their parents are invited to attend. The session starts at 7 pm and
will be in the boardroom of the Algoma District School Board Education
Centre, 644 Albert St. East.

Six youth from Sault Ste. Marie and six youth from Altona, Manitoba will
spend 11 days together, learning about each other?s communities and customs
while volunteering. In addition to having time to discover each community,
the youth, aged 15-18, will first volunteer at ROTARYFEST and then at the
Sunflower Festival in Altona, Manitoba. The group will stay together for
the duration under the guidance of a trained group leader and supervision of
a SEVEC representative.

On the final day of their exchange, each member of the group will have the
opportunity to write a short article on their experience. The expectation
is that through the distribution of these articles others will learn about
both festivals.

All travel expenses and accommodations for the youth will be paid by SEVEC;
youth will be responsible for their meals. Rotary will assist in arranging
the details of their stay in Sault Ste. Marie and in particular will assist
in the identification of youth who wish to participate.

Youth should have an interest in volunteering, a desire to travel to the
other community, be comfortable with the concept of living and working
together as a group and be committed to participating for the entire 11
days.

When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into
the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will
happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on, or we will be
taught to fly.
