Notes from tree chipping planning meeting, 30 Nov 2004
No word from Great Lakes Power. Decided to go with Plan B. Much discussion of the logistics of Plan B, here's a summary:
Corral from Boxing Day, limited staffing until Jan 1, ramp up volunteer schedule from Jan 1 on. Snacks, water, and hot drinks for volunteers from Jan 1, in trailer.
Saturday Jan 8 - in the evening after the mall closes at 6 - is tree chipping day. And-Son will bring their grinder to the site, we will have sufficient volunteers to patrol the perimeter and prevent accidents, sweep, collect stray trees, receive trees from the public as usual for the Saturday night.
And-Son will leave some mulch there for us, we will arrange for two truckloads to go to the Community Gardens, and they will take the rest to their site.
Sunday we will have mulch available. Small crew for shovelling. We will have announced in news media leading up to event, that the last day to drop the tree is Saturday but we won't turn away trees on Sunday. Our volunteers will trailer some trees to And-Son on Sunday, remaining trees will be taken by city staff on Monday morning.
Significantly, no big kitchen/warming tent will be needed this year.
We would like to ask food volunteers to supply the trailer with baked goods from Jan 1 to Jan 9 (of course, store bought and Timmy's will be obtained too, so no big problem if volunteers can't do this). It would also be very nice to have a supper on the Saturday when we're doing the grinding, but this will be small, maybe 10-12 people? No need for kitchen, I can take dishes home, one or two pots of chili or stew should do nicely. Is this something the regular foodies would be willing to do for us?
Wayne will check with Gallivan on a good price for tearaway safety vests, all volunteers on site at any time will wear safety vests.
Don will check with Culligan and Quattra for their previous donations of water and cell phone.
Don will pace out distances and work with Randy to obtain sufficient barricades.
Don will watch for sales on winter work gloves and obtain a fresh supply.
Peter will continue conversation with And-Son and other equipment people (trucks for Gardens mulch?, Soo Disposal for carts and bins)
All of us will brainstorm a site where a truckload or two could be taken/left until spring for our own planting projects and to send the public for self-serve mulch.
Kathie will write up various publicity messages, Randy will put them on city promo spots (radio, print), Peter will put them on cable rollover.
We will collect ink/toner cartridges, cell phones, and blankets/towels for the humane society, from Jan 1 to 9.
Did I forget anything?
