Three Rs Festival Site Supervisor Job Description
There are Three parts to your job
1. Safety, Safety, Safety!!!!
- No smoking near the tree piles or in the trailer
- Maintain the spaces between the tree piles for a fire break
- Please do not adjust the settings on the electric heater in the trailer or plug in anything else (there is only one circuit and if the fuse blows we have to call the PUC to reset it as it’s up the pole)
- Make sure volunteers are appropriately dressed - warm boots, hat, protective gloves
- Do not let volunteers strain themselves or take risks
- Watch volunteers for signs of hypothermia
- There is a cell phone in the trailer (945-1899)
- First aid kit and fire extinguishers are in trailer
2. Site layout and Security
A. First shift of the day
- Unlock trailer and replace key in its hiding place
- Position step under trailer door
- Turn the heater to the HIGH setting
- Turn on the cell phone
- move barricades out from the tree pile to make space for new trees
- lock the donation box and put it outside on the stool it
- place sandwich boards outside near donation box.
B. During the shift:
- If the site is unattended for any period, the donation box must be locked in the trailer
- Maintaining the site - clean up litter, rake needles, etc.
- Keeping the site laid out as per the plan - barricades in place, maintaining fire break, path to bus stop clear (see the site plan in this binder)
C. Before you leave:
- Record volunteers names in log book
- Please make a shift entry into the log noting worthy things: how busy it was, vendors dropping off trees, dumpster lifts, snowstorms, etc.
- If there is no other site supervisor present when you leave, please make sure the key is back in its hiding spot and then lock the trailer
- Hang damp work gloves on the clothesline; ensure heater is positioned on shelf underneath clothesline.
D. At the end of the day:
- move barricades back to close to the tree pile when you leave
- put the donation box, the stool it stands on, most of the sandwich boards, and all shovels and tools in the trailer.
- If you are the last site supervisor of the day, please empty the donation box, count and record amount of money in the binder and then take money home with you (turn in to CN later)
- Turn the heater to the LOW setting (not OFF).
- Turn OFF the cell phone
- Turn OFF the lights
- make sure the key is back in its hiding spot and then lock the trailer
3. Keep volunteers busy
There is usually lots to do at the site - keeping volunteers busy keeps them warm and interested. The site looks friendlier when there are people outside working. We are more likely to get donations when there are people around.
Volunteer Jobs:
- Greeting the public - assisting them with their tree & phone book etc, giving out a leaflet and asking for a donation
- Removing nails, wire, etc. from trees
- Stacking and throwing trees
- Moving snow away from tree piles and dumpsters
- Flattening cardboard (see info on 3R’s festival)
- Piling phone books at one end of the dumpster (see info on 3R’s festival)
- Removing plastic and Styrofoam from collection dumpsters and place into Garbage dumpster
- Raking needles into tree piles
