Re: BOYD pricelist

Thanks for this, Jay. Your comments reflect almost exactly what we
discussed Thurs. night. One of the great things was that we all agreed on
what was good/not so good about the organization of these events - so we
were able to get right to work on improvements.

We've created a flowchart for materials, with some of those improvements,
including a Triage system with

1. 486 or better - goes to System checking
2. 386 or really nice 286 - goes to disassembly
3. below - goes to junk

Systems testing, disassembly, systems repair, and parts testing are four
different areas with clear jobs. Disassembly won't get power, systems
testing won't get parts. We've even started on a floor plan for this.

Only two workstations for systems repair for the 486s or better - so no
competition for parts. Any 486-or-better that's unclear exactly what's
wrong with it on checking, goes directly to disassembly, not to systems
repair - we're not going to spend all day trying to fix it. We're planning
to have a set of test beds for parts testing, and a real emphasis on this
aspect - so much so that there will be more parts sales on the day and much
less attempting to construct systems. We're asking Donna Sagle to manage
Parts - to watch the parts supplies and draw them off if there's surplus,
for the wishlists and for the front sales, but to make sure the systems
people have enough. Parts bins will be placed in between the disassembly
stations and the systems repair stations, not near the systems testing
stations, to make sure the systems testers don't start trying to fix things
and compete with the systems repair people for parts.

If you are available for the next event, we want you to be one of our two
systems repair people - and we'll supply you with an assistant for getting
parts to you, etc.

We're also definitely screening volunteers - but not just for skills but for
attitude as well - there were a couple vols last time who had a "god's gift"
attitude and would not take direction from me or Dave. They will not be
back.

We have lots of jobs available for our young volunteers - for example
testing keyboards and mice, the runners from the Triage area, keeping the
free stuff table organized, and disassembly work, pulling the RAM and floppy
drives out of the 286s, etc.

We're starting to get a few good people placed in the right jobs - for
example our sales crew. The next time will be even better as we get the
back reorganized.

Hello...Jeremy Gostlin here...sorry I counldn't make it on thursday..got
called into work..
I took a look at the pricelist...from past experience with BOYD people are
willing to pay a fair amount for components..the list looks great!
One thing that I wanted to bring up in the meeting was the volunteers
present...

At the last BOYD there were a lot of...let me say...little scavengers. I
found there were too many kids there that were taking parts when they were
needed...for example..I was working on a few systems and components I had
that were going to go into it would disapear...I suggest for volunteers they
submit some sort of resume or credentials, this way there is no problems.
The way I see it is if a volunteer can show they have the training or
knowledge to work on computers than a resume would be appropriate.

This would also solve any issue surrounding injury which I was extremely
worried about at the last BOYD, alot of the younger volunteers were working
with direct power with no supervision or knowledge of the consequences and
safety measures when dealing with these sorts of danger areas. None of them
followed the proper grounding procedure when dealing with powered systems.
These are just my thoughts.

Also, having people at the front who have some sort of sales training would
be very beneficial, at the last BOYD there were some sales trained people
and from what I was told they did a fantastic job.

Get back to me with any questions surrounding this...Thanks
