Update

I did a serious re-org today. Some changes made are as follows.

All three printers are connected to the network. I know once upon a time, I
said we could only have two, but I've done the impossible, and doubled that
cap, so now we have a LaserJet IIID, a LaserJet Series II, and a DeskJet
670C. The 670C prints _very_ slightly smudgy black. It was much worse
until I cleaned the cartridge. I would, therefore, assume that replacing
the cartridge should correct this. At least one page should be printed per
month on that printer in color to make sure that the cartridges don't dry
up.

The CMOS on the old WL computer keeps resetting itself. I'm not sure why
this is. I've replaced the battery twice, un-bridged a short on the
motherboard, and cleaned the entire getup... still it won't retain its
values. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most appreciative.

I've distributed the power load across the computer wall. Now killing one
powerbar isn't a huge deal. I'm quite sure that's the only benefit. I
doubt we have more than one circuit on that wall.

It is safe, though not recommended, to unplug any non-black cables along
that wall (except powerbars) and the worst you'll do is kill a monitor or a
printer. Any black cables must remain plugged in at all times.

The server rack has been restructured to make it easier for me to make
hardware upgrades. That shouldn't have any effect for most people.

Phone cords no-longer go in the misc. comp. hardware box since the computers
no-longer use the phone for anything. Please store them with fax or
telephone supplies.

Misc. hardware is now sorted into three boxes. One of just power cords, one
of just keyboards, and one of other stuff. The "other stuff" box has every
cable bound, every small part in a bag, ever mouse wrapped in an elastic
band, and every card reasonable in anti-static bags. Please, let's try to
keep it this way.

Every cable that runs between the server rack and the client/printing wall
is labeled on both ends. Each end is labeled as to where the _opposite_ end
plugs in. So the network cable plugged into Luke is labeled "2" at the back
of Luke and "Luke" at the hub.

Names are now resolved internally, so instead of using 192.168.15.2
for your outgoing mail server, you can use 'mail' or 'obiwan', etc.
This will make the default netscape config work better.

A full "screened-subnet" type firewall is in place now, and I will finalize
configs tomorrow. This should give us some measure of security while on the
attack-prone cable network.

All hardware to go to BOYD 2.0 is labeled as such. Anything else stays.

We are attempting to find a machine to dedicate to scanning barcodes for the
library. It will probably sit beside Luke in the space where Yoda used to
sit (Yoda is now where the WL PC used to be).

We are also attempting to find a UPS system for the server rack.
We need a system with 10 minutes of life for 3 PCs (and nothing else)
capable of signaling a PC to shut down. Any tips on where to find
such a beast cheaply would be appreciated. I found options for 400$US
(SmartUPS 700 -- 10min -- no room for growth) and 569$ (SmartUPS 1000 --
24min lots of breathing room).

As usual, send questions, gripes, comments to techies@lists.cleannorth.org
