computers in the back room

A number of BOYD volunteers have been working to salvage NRCan (Bug Lab) computers to provide them to kids from Etienne Brule School's low income families. We're working with Marg Dodds, principal of Etienne Brule.

Today we salvaged more than thirty systems and monitors. They are in Imagination Station. Mark, Dan, Jim, and Josh are working to ensure the equipment is all complete and working, and to load a free operating system called Linux Ubuntu on them.

This will take a few weeks. Please be patient with the amount of equipment there. If there is a need to move equipment to make room for another activity (rainbarrels?) please let me know and I'll get the guys to pitch in and clear the necessary area in advance of your needing it.

In a couple of weeks EB School will send their van to pick up the stuff that is ready.

Thanks for your patience.

Kathie

Hi Alice,

Just to clarify what our volunteers will be doing today.

Dan Brosemer, Mark Boychuk, Tim Lynham, and I will be there for 4 pm. I
believe Jim Dew will also be there but I don't have confirmation.

Tom Dodds will join us if he can.

We will load the cube van with the following:

1. Thirty plus systems intended for Etienne Brule school, to fill a
wishlist received from that school. Cases, monitors, keyboards, mice,
and power cords, plus additional items to fill in for nonworking or
incomplete equipment.

These thirty systems will preferentially be the Dells with OEM tags, so
that EB School can install Windows, legally.

2. About a dozen monitors to go with systems previously salvaged and at
the CN office now.

3. Other equipment that in our volunteers judgement can be reused in
the community at this time.

We are not prepared to accept material that can only be recycled, not
reused in the community. We do not have transportation or a deal
arranged with recyclers, and we are now facing recycling fees.

I hope that the volume of material we are able to take today will assist
you in dealing with your space constraints. I know that Etienne Brule
School will appreciate the equipment.

Looking forward to seeing you,
Kathie
