Re: OEC

Thanks for this, Peter. I'm happy you were there and made those points. I'd probably have just bragged about CN if it had been me.

I hope the refreshments helped make it worth your while.

Hi All
I met with the Environmental Commisssioner (+ 3 of his staff + 5 members
of his advisory committee). They had spent the day touring ASI and the St
Mary's River...checking out our local "hotspots". Mike Riley
(Bi-National....) and Brian Christie/ Gary McGuffin (Lake Superior....)
gave lengthy presentations of their activities and I gave a 10 minute
overview of our activities.

I gave a pitch for
1) more gov. support to the WDO for funding waste diversion initiatives
2)legislation to help control urban sprawl and at the same force city
planners to include bicycle paths, green spaces, public transit, etc in
their plans...AND restrict development of the GTA by supporting the
development of smaller/Northern communities through incentives/subsidies
(and NOT subsidizing growth of the GTA) 3) Since Mike Riley raised the
issue, I supported his concerns about the local Conservation Auth. seems
to be out of sync with most of the "Envfironmental" community.

Gord Miller ( the former PC MLA from Northbay) was attentive but for the
most part seemed to be going through the motions. I had a good follow-up
discussion with 2 of his staff. Neither the EC or any of his "advisory
committee" took time to talk with me after the meeting. They did seem to
take a special interest in the ST Mary's River remediation and the Great
Lakes conservation issues...particularly in the funding and regulation
jurisdictions.

Overall, it went well. They offered wine , beer and snacks after the
meeting.
