LOW-INCOME COVERAGE. See David Suzuki?s recent Science Matters newspaper column ?Energy efficiency shouldn't just be for those who can afford it,? based on information supplied by Green Communities? Bruce Pearce ? Also note the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association?s Spring 2005 edition of Canadian Housing, which includes a lead editorial by Clifford Maynes, Executive Director of Green Communities Canada, an article about energy efficiency in Toronto social housing citing the contribution of Green$aver, and a piece by Sadia Gassim of World Wide Opportunities for Women (Waterloo) about promoting energy efficiency to ethnocultural communities and low-income earners.
HOUSING CONFERENCE. Bruce Pearce (Green Communities) and Sidney Ribaux (Iquiterre) delivered a workshop on "Affordable Efficient Housing: towards a national energy efficiency strategy for low-income Canadians" at the Canadian Housing & Renewal Association Congress, 28 April ... CHRA members voted to endorse a resolution calling on the federal government to deliver on its budget commitment to invest $500 million in a national low income energy efficiency program.
FEET FIRST. Green Communities? Jacky Kennedy and Briana Illingworth were in Seattle 6-7 May as guests of Feet First, a non-profit group promoting the rights and interests of pedestrians and encouraging walking. Feet First held two days of workshops on developing Safe & Active Routes to Seattle Schools programs. Jacky made several presentations about Green Communities? experiences with ASRTS, and Briana participated in a workshop specifically for youth. Jacky will next travel to Zurich, 22-23 September, to speak on the iwalk club at the Walk21 conference.
E-SALVAGED. Clean North?s computer recycling event, 23 April yielded 34 pallets of recyclable e-waste, and revenues of $1800 (plus income from sale of ink and toner cartridges and cell phones). CN donated 11 systems to six charities, and now has ten complete Pentium II systems for sale. Event partners included: TransProvincial Freight, Sault Ste. Marie PUC, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Sault College, local Katimavik participants, and Culligan Water.
EcoCENTRAL. Resource Conservation Manitoba (RCM) and several other non-profits have just moved to a prominent new green building on Portage Ave., Winnipeg's main drag. The Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) building features recycled materials, composting toilets, and a green roof. RCM and MEC are discussing joint initiatives, such as composting workshops, and sessions on workplace trip reduction, says RCM E.D. Randall McQuaker.
GOODBYE KING COAL. The Ontario Clean Air Alliance hosts a celebration to say goodbye to coal-fired energy plants and hello to cleaner air, 26 May in Toronto ...
