Dear "regulars" I heard from HRDC yesterday about our summer student applications. I had requested four students, to help with our various garden activities especially the community gardens, to help with the vehicle emissions clinic, and (2) for the bike workshop. Plus I submitted a separate application, suggested by Joanne Zeppa, for a special needs student to offer general office support. That student would be our co-op, Chris Kertesz. Rita Kokis at HRDC called me to tell me we've been approved for the special needs student, and for one other student. I've been collecting resumes for about two months now. Significantly, about two weeks ago Michelle Loubert expressed interest in a summer job with us. Michelle has been a vice-chair since last fall's annual meeting when she stepped in to that role, has done our tree program at Rome's and has been regularly attending Clean North meetings. We have several other resumes, only one of these people has worked with Clean North before, Sarah Hay, who helped with high school network activities several years ago. I will have to find out if there is an age requirement on these jobs, but the requirement I do know about is that the student must be returning to school in the fall. Michelle is planning to attend teachers college at Laurentian. Also, if we were to hire her under this program she would have to step down as vice-chair, but she was going to do that anyway when she leaves in September. When I put in the applications for summer students I had thought we could use some of our Vehicle Emissions clinic budget to hire a supervisor for a few hours a week, for the five or six weeks up to our clinic. But if we hire Michelle, she is so well versed in what we do and how we do it that I'm sure we won't need to hire a supervisor. Alternatively, we could use a bit of the Vehicle $ to top up Michelle's wage somewhat (it's only $6.85/hr). Your comments wanted. Start date is June 10th. thanks kathie -- O my soul, do not aspire to immortal life, but exhaust the limits of the possible. - Pindar
