Clean North e-news - URGENT Action Alert!

URGENT REQUEST: LOCAL ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Once you're in a hole, you stop digging. The hardest step is admitting that you are in a hole. Good news! The UN panel on climate change, considered to be world authorities, announced their findings in Paris last Friday. We can no longer pretend that human-induced climate change is not happening and people everywhere are lending their hands and their voices to be part of the solution.

More good news! Right now in Sault Ste. Marie we have an opportunity to make a difference. The City of SSM is hosting an open house regarding their project to further expand Trunk Road. We know that this will increase and speed up traffic in an already pedestrian/bicycle-hostile environment.

Sault Ste Marie is "blessed" with having the second highest km/road per capita in the province. One of the main causes of global warming is our dependency on automobiles which is very much based on how we design and build our cities. Now that we have admitted that global warming is real and caused by human behaviour, we need to change direction.

We say that until the City has a coordinated plan to address escalating climate change and the declining health of our population, due in part to environmental pollution and lack of exercise, let's STOP expanding our roads. Let's STOP digging the hole.

The City is seeking public input so let's share our vision for the future of Sault Ste. Marie. We have the opportunity now to be world leaders in creating a thoughtful urban design that values places for people over places for cars, that encourages healthy lifestyles, community involvement, interaction between young and old, meaningful work opportunities and that genuinely supports our environment.

We can do more than stop digging. Together, we can climb out of the hole and build a better world for ourselves and our children.
