1. Annual Meeting at Mockingbird Hill Farm

It's official. And this is your official notice. Clean North's annual meeting will be at Mockingbird Hill Farm on Friday, October 14th starting at 6 pm.

We'll have the potluck around the campfire behind the Buchan House, right next to the corn maze. Bring food or drink, something that can be kept hot or heated on a Coleman stove, or cooked over the fire, or served cold. We'll have plates, utensils, and cups, so you don't have to worry about those.

We'll eat first and do the very brief required business afterwards, and we're counting on another lovely evening and sunset like we've had for the past two years. And after that, we can all meander through the maze together.

Please come and have fun. We'd love to see you there.

2. Bring Out Your Dead again

October first is the big day. Can you help? We need people - on Friday Sept 30 we could use a few to help set up tables, hang up signs, and sort the good from the bad and the ugly stuff coming in. No experience necessary - the team includes a few guys who can tell it all apart.

Then on the first, we need help at the sale table (again we have knowledgeable people, we just need more good CN people). Got smiles? We need you.

And in shifts from 10 am to about 6 when we get it all cleaned up, we'll need lots of help with loading the truck. Got muscles? I'm your fan.

Please email kathie@cleannorth.org if you can help, and let me know what you want to help with and what time(s) you can be there.

Thanks!

3. Great Lakes water compact - action needed

An action alert from Sherri Cleaves, longtime SSM water advocate:

Hello everyone, as you know one of my great goals in life is to protect the Great Lakes. Unfortunately they are in danger because they are being drained/diverted from the southern states to allow for city growth, farming and economic growth with no reguard for the fact that 99% of Lake Superior is from glacial drift and only 1% is recharged every year- we are exceeding the recharge and are in effect changing Lake Superior and all the great lakes forever- they can not recover. The International Joint Committee is going to be reviewing this diversion (over 90 m cubed / second comes out of Chicago alone and more pipes (the size of buildings) are being planned to ship the water into the desert states.

If you get a chance please comment and say that you object to any diversions of water from the great lakes basin. Go to www.ijc.org and follow Boards then ongoing tasks.

More information is there on the Annex 2001 and the Compact which are documents that want to allow the diversions but only if all states and Ontario agree can also be reviewed- the only problem with this is that if the US non border states want the water the governors of the states that border the great lakes cannot say no politically.

I will be drafting a letter to send myself and if anyone want a copy so they could send it that would be great.

Email concerns can be sent to :Peter.Yee@ec.gc.ca he is our rep from environment Canada.

Thanks everyone. If you want to forward this to more people please do.

4. Visions of a Renewed Earth

Visions of a Renewed Earth provides an opportunity for social and environmental justice groups, and individuals, to come together in solidarity and peace to learn about what each other is doing and talk about our visions for a healthy and vibrant global community. Come and share your thoughts and dreams for now and the days ahead.

This event comes at a time when all around us are calls for change and renewal. The UN is meeting within the month of September to establish 8 development goals to be met by 2015, addressing issues such as extreme poverty, starvation, primary education, women?s rights, and goals for sustainable development. As well, a committee on Darfur is to lobby the US administration to take a lead on action in Sudan. The war on Iraq continues and mothers of soldiers and concerned citizens are mobilizing against it.

All in attendance will have a chance to come together and discuss and present practical solutions to local and global issues and alternatives for renewal. There will be fair trade coffee available, snacks and refreshments.

*Visions of a Renewed Earth ~ Thursday September 29th 2005, 7:00pm Algoma University Auditorium. *Groups please RSVP paulpaddler@hotmail.com or call (705) 254-2821.

Have a lovely fall! Hope to see you at one of these events!

I have perceiv'd that to be with those I like is enough,
To stop in company with the rest at evening is enough,
To be surrounded by beautiful, curious, breathing, laughing flesh is
enough,
To pass among them, or touch any one, or rest my arm ever so lightly round
his or her neck for a moment-what is this, then?
I do not ask any more delight-I swim in it, as in a sea.

- Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass
