1. Great Lakes Water Diversion

Cecilia Fernandez has written to us asking that we let you know about this issue. It's urgent.

"This is about the Annex 2001 which is the proposal to divert water from the
Great Lakes. Lee-Ann Chevrette, Betty Angeconeb and I came up with three form
letters which people can sign and send away. One is from a First Nations
perspective, one from a scientific/monitoring perspective and one from a public
consultation perspective.

"The deadline is fast approaching -- October 18!!
Yikes."

To get a copy of one or all of Cecilia's letters, and the addresses to send them to, please email her at cefernan@uoguelph.ca. Hey, the work is already done for you! Please get this in, it's important. Thanks.

2. BOYD went well

Once again, and our ninth event. We're getting to be good at this! Soon we'll have some photos to amuse you, posted on cleannorth.org.

Highlights:

A lot of extra youthful help this time, which made the labour load for us older folks much less, but presented some management issues (gotta keep them busy or they'll start getting into trouble in a roomful of unwanted electronics!).

For some reason, it was Minor Injury Day - I must have bandaged five or six cuts and scrapes. But no one reported any infections afterwards.

A full truckload of equipment and then some! We had three extra pallets that wouldn't fit on the first truck. TransProvincial was good as gold, came with a second truck to take the rest. This is only the second time we've needed the extra space.

There are some leftovers you may be interested in, see item #4 (below).

3. Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting is scheduled for October 22 at Mockingbird Hill Farm. Don't let the words Annual Meeting fool you - this is a bonfire with marshmallows and ghost stories! We do precious little official business at this event, it's a social. Please come, and bring your family and/or friends.

Bring a dish to share, either cold, able to be heated on a Coleman stove, or cooked over the bonfire. Also your own plate and cutlery (we'll have some extras if you forget). And dress warmly! (you can forget the bug spray!)

4. Leftover computers - first come, first served

There are a few goodies we just couldn't put on the recycling truck. Want one?

Pentium II system, 3.2 gigabyte hard drive, 128 MB ram. Complete with 15 inch monitor, keyboard, mouse, power cords. Tested and known to work. No operating system loaded, you have to find your own. $100.

We have four of these. I wanted to offer them to our members first, before putting an ad in the paper. If you want one, email kathie@cleannorth.org and let me know, and I'll put your name on one.

5. Bat House Party

We have the front lobby of Rome's booked for Saturday morning, October 23rd. We'll be selling our Bat Houses, in hopes that people will put them up this fall and they'll be ready for occupancy in springtime. Sometimes when we sell them in spring, we're afraid they'll sit in garages for a few weeks until the owner gets around to putting it up, and by then the bats already have their summer accommodation booked.

So we're trying this. Can you lend a hand? Neil will need some help with it. Please email bats@cleannorth.org if you'd like to spend some part of your Saturday morning in a lively (warm) spot, helping with this worthwhile project. Thanks!

**************************************

Have a great autumn! Get that garden put to bed, and come out to play with us at Mockingbird Hill.

Kathie

When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into
the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will
happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on, or we will be
taught to fly.
