1. Computer recycling results

We're happy to report that we all survived it!

This was the seventh such event since we began in 2000, and for the first time, we needed the backup transport truck. After filling the first one, with 26 pallets plus stuff crammed into every nook and cranny, we still had 14 more pallets we just couldn't shoehorn on. Fortunately, we've always made sure to plan for this, so TransProvincial brought us a second truck Monday morning and we got those pallets loaded. It's all away now. If you missed it, we'll try again in spring.

This location (the old PUC building on Second Line) was ideal from a truck-loading standpoint (thank goodness as there was so much more to do!). But it was not so great from a standpoint of attracting customers. We didn't earn nearly as much as we had hoped, in fact we took in far less $ this time than we had ever taken in before, even the first event when we were figuring out how to do this or the Consumers event when we were dealing with utter chaos.

So we sent a lot of good stuff south this time. For next time, we'll either hope for another Mall location, or we'll brainstorm how to bring in the shoppers. Your ideas welcome.

2. Going across the bridge in the next 3 days?

We had noticed that OfficeMax, the big box office-supply store on the Michigan side, has a special offer on now. Bring in an ink or toner cartridge for recycling, and they'll give you a ream of their recycled-content bright white office paper. Now, we says to ourselves, the Clean North office seems to be constantly _out_ of such white paper. But we have this computer event, you see, where people bring in printers, and usually they have cartridges in them, we says to ourselves.

We now have a big box at the office, of toner and ink cartridges. But the promotion is supposed to end this Saturday, and it's one to a customer per day. So, if you were happening to be going across the bridge for some other reason, and you could add in one tiny errand for us, we would be very grateful. Email me and I'll see that you get as many cartridges to take along as you will have people on your trip. Thanks!

3. Annual Meeting notice

Just in case you missed it in the last paper newsletter. We'll be meeting at Mockingbird Hill Farm, the evening of October 17th. We will have a big campfire, the corn maze, and each other's wonderful company to keep us entertained. RSVP required, this email or 945-1573. And don't worry, we have officer volunteers already so you won't be roped into anything just for showing up!

4. Tree Chipping update

Next January's Tree Chipping day will be Jan 11th. Mark your calendars, take inventory of your longjohns and do all needed repairs, and plan to be there! It's the coolest Clean North event going!

5. Next Newsletter

Deadline for submissions will be December first. I'll remind you again closer to the date. What's got you excited? Write it down and email it to ed@cleannorth.org. Email him with comments about the newsletter, too - he would love to hear your suggestions, constructive criticism, and unabashed praise.

6. New person in the office

If you call or stop by, you might get to meet Darlene Massicotte-Lortie. She is our new office support person, and she's great! She even got that photocopier to work, on her first morning in the office. I'm impressed!

Darlene is volunteering with us to get back into the workforce after some time away from offices. She wants to learn about spreadsheets and some of the other fun things we get up to. We'll have her updating membership files, working on the library, and maybe even scanning some of those historic Clean North event photographs. Look for them on the website in the coming months.

7. EnerGuide for Houses

You may have noticed that the Federal Government is offering a monetary incentive to retrofit your home for energy savings. I don't have full details, but I understand that an EnerGuide for Houses assessment is required in order to participate. We've had a call from the MP's office wanting to know where people can get an EGH, apparently many people are calling them. Since Naturally Green folded, we didn't have an answer. But I went to find out. As a result, I'm in discussions with the Green Communities Association in Peterborough, about getting one of our local contractors or home inspectors to take the certification and offer the service.

As soon as I have anything definite, I'll let you know. But rest assured, we're moving quickly on this one. Gotta make hay while the sun shines, eh?

8. Household Special Waste depot closes Oct 25.

If you have stuff to drop off, don't delay. Get thee to the HSW depot before October 25th and beat the end-of-season rush. Paint, varnish, thinner, auto fluids, pesticides, cleaning fluids, batteries, mercury, etc.

The HSW depot is located in the industrial park. Going north on Great Northern Road, turn left at the entrance across from Esquire Honda. Go all the way to the back of the Industrial Park, where the road bends around to the right, and there it is on the left hand side. It's open Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30 am to 4 pm, until October 25, when it closes for the season. They don't have heat, you see. They'll open again in April.

Clean North's Second Coat Paint Exchange will remain open all winter, but it only accepts Latex paints and stains, not oil-based ones. Call 945-1573 before stopping by to drop off or to shop for second-hand paint. We're staffed by volunteers, so the schedule can be a bit "soft".

Keep warm! And if you need anything, call.
