volunteer opportunities

Members E-News

Yes, I know this is three messages in two weeks, but if you respond to
this one, I promise to go back to one a month or so...

This is a serious call for volunteers.

I’m going to list a whole lot of volunteer opportunities, so please take a
peek and see if you can fit in some time to help with any of these. Some
are recurring, some are a one-time thing. You should know that at this
time, there is no paid staff person running the storefront office. I’m
trying to lessen the load on myself so that I can spend some time writing
grant proposals. Right now, I have no time for that while keeping up
with the day to day business of the office.

First, a time-limited one:

1) Interested in lawn pesticides? We need a person to go to the
Envirothon activity day on November 18th, and bring our pesticide kit,
and answer questions. We have seventy of these kits that need to get
into people’s hands, and we figured the Envirothon youth would be a
good place to do that. I can give you complete details if you’re
interested.

Next, some office details:

2) filing clerk - two hours per week, to straighten out our filing system
and keep it that way! We have some ideas about how we’d like it to
work, but no time to go and sort it out, and the filing is backing up a bit.
Can you help? Please make our work more efficient...

3) banking help - twice per month, somebody to prepare the bank
deposits and go and take them to the bank. Not a big chore, but it has to
be done regularly, so are you the reliable type?

4) librarian - two hours per week, to enter new information into the library
system. There’s a manual, you don’t have to figure anything out! Just
be the person who’s making consistent decisions about assigning call
numbers, etc. We’ll describe it all to you...

5) general office help - four of us are volunteering to open mail, answer
the phone, talk to drop-ins, write the cheques, and keep the membership
database up to date. Can you join us? It’s a very pleasant space. One
works two hours a week, another works eight, so whatever time you want
to spend, we could use your help! You decide what hours, and let us
know.

6) office deal-maker - do you have an organized mind? We need
someone to sort out the best long distance deal for us, figure out the
best insurance deal, etc. We’ll give you the files on this, it’s up to you
to make the phone calls, work out the ins and outs, and give us a
recommendation. I have this in “ongoing” because it seems there’s
always something that needs sorting out this way. After insurance and
phone, maybe get a donation of carpeting, or some software donated, or
get our Cable fees reduced, or something like that...

Then the one-time things:

7) Help stuff the mailing for the fundraising letter. We’ve drafted a letter,
brainstormed a list of people to send it to, and found their addresses and
put it in a spreadsheet for mailing labels. Now we need people to fold the
letter and stuff envelopes. One-time work party, the end of next week.
Time and date still TBA.

8) Christmas tree chipping site supervisor(s) - we need about twelve of
you. This year we’re adding bicycles to the collection, for the new
Community Bicycle Workshop. And we could use your ideas about
other improvements. But we also need site supervisors, the people who
offer to take a shift or two at the site, and supervise the other people who
come to help. You will need to come to one evening meeting where we
will go over the details so you’re prepared to be the boss. Shifts at the
site are about three to four hours, and we supply the volunteers to throw
trees, squash cardboard, etc.

So, if you or anyone you know is interested in doing any of these jobs,
please reply to this email! We will love getting to know you better!

Kathie

Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work
with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should
leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms
of those who work with joy. -- Kahlil Gibran
