James Gordon Tickets now available! Get yours while we still have
seats, there are only 40 tickets printed and 15 of them are already
spoken for. November 2, 8 p.m. at the Imagination Station (back room of
the Clean North office). James is a wonderful singer/songwriter who
pens ballads about Canadian historical events and people. His songs
have been described as "from the historical to the hysterical" and the
evening will be a fun one.

Same night, around the corner at the Fireball Café, our Recycled Art
Show and Sale. Have a piece of artwork to recycle? Inspired to create
one? Talk to Maria at 949-8756.

The Newsletter deadline has been extended. Mark, the intrepid editor,
has been caught in the throes of starting up our Paint Remixing Plant
and the ins and outs of dealing with Our Fair City have taken their
toll. So, get out your pens and write something, eh? You still have
time to get it into the Fall 2001 edition. Be humourous, be thoughtful,
be inspiring, be silly, but be productive! Email your contributions to
Mark, tellall@fireballcafe.com.

Anybody know anyone close to Scarberia? Our little environmental group
has been promised five
desk chairs, but they are in Scarborough, and we are here, and never the
twain shall meet. Well, not on principle, but it's a practical matter,
you see. Do any of you know anyone who might be 1) able, and 2)
willing, to

1) pick up the five chairs (need access to a biggish vehicle or
willingness to make more than one trip in a smallish one).
Unfortunately, the donor doesn't make it easy - it has to be on a
workday between 8:30 am and 3 pm.

2) find a spot these chairs can wait until one of us can get there with
our own biggish vehicle, to pick them up and bring them where they will
do us some good.

Clean North has been trying to get some decent chairs for the office,
for many moons now. The ones we have are four-caster, which tend to
dump unsuspecting occupants unceremoniously onto the cold hard ground.
I'm terrified of a Worker's Comp case. Is anyone willing and able?
Lifetime supply of maple syrup is promised...

Our Green Side Up tree seedling giveaway at Rome's, last weekend, was a
great success. We handed out over 1000 little evergreen trees, and most
of a huge dump truck load of our Christmas tree mulch, to people eager
to plant one or two trees in their yard. Our latest effort towards
breathable air in the Sault, and a really good time for those who came
and helped out, not to mention a boost for the Ibuprofen and liniment
companies. This may become an annual event. If you want to get on the
list of volunteers for next time, email petmcla@soonet.ca and Peter will
make sure you are called.

Office Volunteers always needed. If you would like to help for an hour
or two a week, answering the phone, watering the plants, doing errands
to the post box or the copy shop, greeting drop-in visitors and helping
them find the information they need, returning phone messages about how
to compost or what goes in the Blue Box (the Answer Book is provided!),
please email kathie@cleannorth.org and tell me what hour(s) you want to
come in. I will have everything ready for you to go to town (oops,
we're already in town...).

Clean North's annual meeting is November 2. At that time we have a few
items to discuss. One is a budget, which will be prepared and
presented. Another is a proposal to amend our operating documents to
specify that none of our officers can be employed by the organization.
There are pros and cons to that, so we need your input. Plan to attend,
the potluck supper at 6, the meeting at 7 (and then the James Gordon
concert at 8!).

Also at that meeting, we need some new officers. Both of our
vice-chairs, as well as our treasurer, want to make room for new faces
around the table and signatures on the cheques. Can you fill one of
these roles? Vice-chairs need to attend monthly meetings to help make
Clean North decisions, and to take on a responsible role in one or more
Clean North projects. The Treasurer provides oversight for the account
management (bookkeeping is done by managers, not the Treasurer), and
signatures on official documents such as our Charitable Information
Return, GST rebate forms, etc. Depending on how the discussion goes on
officers/employees, we may also need a new Chair. Volunteers? Email
kathie@cleannorth.org.

Rebecca Ginter is set to revive our Adopt-a-Highway litter cleanup this
fall. This is a really fun thing to do, on a brisk morning, take a
stroll out on Airport Road and pick up the (teensy) amount of litter
that has accumulated there. It's a fast-food-free area, so there is
never that much work, and the people are great to hang around with.
Rebecca always makes it fun. Call her at 779-3640 if you would like to
be on her call list.

As always, keep a watch on http://cleannorth.org to find out the latest
and greatest, including Clean North events, local environmental issues
and news, and action alerts - stories about how a timely letter from you
could help sway a decision-maker. These will always have links to other
stories and sites, as well as background on an issue and contact
information for the decision-makers. Your influence could be as easy as
clicking your mouse!
