Join the techies list while you're at http://lists.cleannorth.org/, then.
Take on a project when one comes up.

That list has everything from people complaining that the system doesn't
like their password because they left the CAPSLOCK on to debugging of
glitches in the IMAP server.  You'll get the idea pretty quickly.
