Book Recycling Program Announced

Today Clean North announced the latest in its series of recycling events
for special materials. Books of all kinds will be accepted for recycling
at an event to be held July 5 and 6.

"We're very excited to be able to provide a solution for unwanted, damaged,
or out of date books," said Clean North's chair, Kathie Brosemer. "We've
been asked several times in the past what people can do with books no one
wants any longer. If they're still wanted, there are numerous book sales
in the community where people can drop books off, but out-of-date, damaged,
or no longer useful books had no place to go. Until now," she added.

Organizer Doris Welz said, "We're working with both local school boards,
the library, and several other institutions to recycle books they no longer
need." Institutions can make arrangements for a drop off by emailing
info@cleannorth.org or phoning the Clean North office at 945-1573.

Books will be shipped to Montreal, where they will undergo a sorting and
processing that will see the covers turned into roofing felt and the
insides become toilet tissue.

Welz points out that all hardcover and softcover books will be accepted,
but that the organization can't handle phone books, catalogs, or magazines
in this event. "Catalogs and magazines can be recycled in your blue box if
you have one, and please save your old phone books for our annual
collection after Christmas," she asks.

"This is the perfect time to clean out the basement and attic, and gather
up old encyclopedias, almanacs, and out of date textbooks no one needs any
longer. Also anything musty, torn, or water-damaged," adds Welz. "We will
sort out any books that really are still useful, and turn those over to one
of the charity book sales, so don't hesitate to bring them along if you
don't want them anymore," says Brosemer, "If the weather is nice, we'll do
a little book sale on the spot to help defray our costs."

Collection organizer Peter McLarty asks that all books be brought to the
Trbovich Building, on Second Line next to the City Police Station, on July
5th and 6th. "Thanks to the PUC, we have a perfect location for this
event," he enthused. "Please bring books to us in cardboard boxes,"
McLarty added, noting, "We have to put them onto the pallets in cardboard
boxes, so if everyone brings them to us that way, it will make our job that
much easier."
