The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society is holding its annual plant sale on May 24 from 8am to 12pm at the United Baptist Church, 41 Malabar Dr. Come to find books, tools, new and unusual plants, garden favorites, compost, mulch, composters, bat houses, and rain barrels. For the past 8 years, Clean North has hosted semi-annual Computer Recycling events where, for a small fee, local residents could drop off their unwanted e-waste (computers, peripherals and other small electronic items).
Clean North wishes to inform the community that we are not planning to carry out this event in 2008.
Community Living Algoma (with the assistance of Clean North and the City) will be opening a new Community Recycling Depot at 285 Wilson Street. The scheduled opening date is April 17. This will be a year-round operation open Tuesday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 and on Saturdays from 8:00 to 1:00. A small recycling fee will be charged for each computer system to help cover transportation costs.
In addition to unwanted computer systems, you will also be able to drop off other small electronic items (calculators, Mp3 players, VCR, CD players, etc), inkjet and toner cartridges, cell phones, and clean/dry Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene).
Clean North invites the entire community to support this environmental initiative. Please watch the media for further information about the grand opening!
Clean North would also like to remind Sault residents that as our thoughts shift to spring cleaning, that we seriously consider all of the alternatives to disposal before sending anything to landfill. One of the simplest alternatives is to give items away through a "freebie" ad in a local paper or at a website such as SaultFreeCycle. You can also place items at the edge of your property with a sign saying "FREE".

EARTH DAY - APRIL 22ND, 2008
6:30 pm at the SSM Public Library (downstairs) - 50 East Street. Clean North, in partnership with the SSM Public Library, is hosting the screening of the Canadian movie "Garbage - The Revolution Starts at Home." This is an informative, sometimes disturbing, and even occasionally humorous look at where our trash comes from and where it ends up. Admission is free. A panel discussion after the film will be led by city councilor Steve Butland and city works dept. waste diversion supervisor, Randy Roy.
Clean North will be donating a copy of the Garbage movie to the Sault Ste Marie public library for its DVD collection.
EARTH WEEK - April 20 -26/08
Clean North will post your Earth Week event in our window at 736 Queen Street East. Just call 945-1573 and leave us a message as to what your event/project is and the name of your group/organization. Prize for the most creative and the most significant projects will be copies of the movie "Garbage."

You likely know he's cycling 11,000 km from Istanbul to Beijing to raise awareness about global warming. He'd like residents to take small actions to save C02 emissions that will hopefully add up to 11,000 tonnes -- 1 tonne for every km he rides. There's a calculator on the site that shows people some of the small steps they can take, and it automatically adds up their savings, and adds that total to the overall tally. We're a go for fall, against the odds. Our Bring Out Your Dead e-waste reuse and recycling event will be held on the 29th of September, 10 am to 4 pm, at the PUC building on Second Line.
A different location than the usual, at the very front of the building, with no room for parking when you're dropping off. We'll have a drive through drop off instead. We'll have a $2 per car fee, to help cover our expenses. The city is taking care of the costs for the recycling company to accept our stuff, but we have costs for publicity, packaging, and care and feeding of volunteers.
Parking will be available along the west wall of the building to access the sale area, through a different set of doors. Note that we usually have quite a selection of tested, excellent electronics for sale at garage sale prices.
Wishlists are also being accepted from local charities, for free computer equipment. Click here, for the wishlist form.
Businesses and institutions, be aware that we will only be accepting a maximum of one pickup truck load, and then only by appointment on the Friday before the event. Please send in this form by fax in advance.

We've just received notice that our favourite location to hold the popular computer and e-waste recycling event we fondly know as Bring Out Your Dead, has been rented. It's no longer available to us. Help!
Any ideas? We need a big space, 2-3000 sq feet would be nice, with at least one loading dock and good public access. Free would be very nice, but a nominal charge for electricity could be paid and a charitable receipt provided for the value of the rent.
email Kathie right away if you have any suggestions. A prize for the one that results in a new home for BOYD...

Time to plant trees with Clean North! Do what you can to improve the air and cool the planet!
Saturday August 18 from 9:00 am to Noon at Lemieux's on Black Road. The trees are larger stock this year, so they will sell for $5 per tree. The tree species are mainly Norway Spruce, Red Pine, Bur Oak, Red Oak, and European Larch. The pine and oak are from a local seed source, all grow well in this climate. Do remember to water well during planting and throughout this first growing season to get the trees well established.
Christmas tree chip mulch will be available, by donation. It works well for conifer trees, as it is acidic. Layers of newspaper on top of the soil, then about six inches of tree chip mulch, will prevent weeds and grasses from overtopping your little tree and taking all the nutrients, water, and sunlight. Bring your own container(s) for mulch (first come, first served until it's gone).

The International Business Times reports on a bill that would require food sold in the US made from cloned crops or livestock to be labeled as such. The reasoning is similar to that used to lobby for labeling of GMO foods. There is no reporting on how widely-accepted this bill is so far.

Clean North announces its spring Bring Out Your Dead e-waste reuse and recycling event. The program, which has run twice per year since the spring of 2000, will take place at the PUC building on Second Line. All unwanted electronic equipment will be accepted, except TVs and microwave ovens, for which no market can be found.
“We have to charge $3 per computer monitor, because of the fees we face with the recyclers in southern Ontario,” explained Kathie Brosemer, spokesperson for the group. “The city is helping with half the cost of recycling the monitors, and TransProvincial Freight is shipping them for us at no charge, so the cost to people participating is really very low.”
The public is invited to drop off unwanted electronics, known as e-waste, on Saturday, the 28th of April, from 10 am to 4 pm., and to browse the sale tables at the same time.
“We've been fortunate to locate a supply of used but still very recent computers, in advance of our program, so we know that we will have some very nice equipment on the sale table for this event,” said Brosemer. “We usually don't know in advance what will turn up, but this time we will have a nice reuse component to the project. If you're in the market for a Pentium III, come and see what we have.”
