In a perfect world, we’d never use plastic bags; in the real world in Canada, milk comes in plastic bags, and so does frozen fruit! However, here at Clean North we have some suggestions for reusing these bags.
First, milk bags…the bags that milk comes in are actually decent-quality plastic. If you clean them, you can use them for sandwiches, fresh veggies, cheese, or other foods. One of our members uses milk bags to put raw meat in…then she puts the milk bag with meat in it inside a ziploc before freezing. That way the meat is double bagged to help prevent freezer burn, and she is able to use the ziploc over and over again without having to stress over removing bacteria from the outer ziploc.
Another member boils/blanches their excess swiss chard, spinach, and/or kale; lets it dry; and places it in clear milk bags, sealing the tops and freezing it vertically oriented to start with. These greens can then be sauteed with some oil, garlic and onion over the winter, extending the summer bounty/season.
So on to frozen fruit bags! They are also high-quality bags with ziploc closures, so why not clean them and then use them for sandwiches, fresh veggies, etc.? Just because they have blueberries or strawberries on the outside doesn’t mean you can’t use them for another purpose. You can put a bit of masking tape on them to label them.
What plastic bags do you use in creative ways?
